    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the rate the same for mixing/mastering as it is tracking?

A: Yes!  We do our best to keep all of our services as affordable as possible.  That’s why you only pay for the time you use at Barn Productions!  We don’t have different rates for different services; you pay the same rate whether you’re tracking, mixing, mastering, or utilizing our creative services.  You decide how much time you want to put into each part of your project, helping you stay within your budget.

Q: Where exactly is the studio located?

A: We are located in the heart of Los Angeles, just northeast of Downtown L.A., in Lincoln Heights (90031).  The studio is easily accessible from highways 5, 10, 110 and 101.  For security purposes, we do not disclose our exact location until you have booked a session or an in-studio consultation.

Q: Can we record live drums there?

A: Yes!  Not only do we record live drums, but we do it well!  There’s plenty of space for a full band to set up and we can make your drums sound great.  You can visit our Samples Page to hear our drum sounds and visit our Facility Page to see pictures of the studio.

Q: What kind of gear do you have?

A: Before we answer this question, we ask that you visit our Samples Page to hear the quality of our work.  You’re not paying for our gear, you’re paying for our ears!  We are confident in saying that we have the knowledge and experience to make commercial-quality recordings in almost any setting.  To learn specifics about our gear and capabilities, visit our Gear & Stats Page.

Q: Do you have instruments we can use?

A: Yes! Visit our Instruments Page to see what musical elements we have available to add to your recordings.

Q: Do you have a vocal booth?

A: We do have a vocal booth!  It is only large enough to fit one person inside it.  Visit our Facility Page to see images and layout of the studio.

Q: Do you have a way to isolate amplifiers?

A: Yes, we can isolate them by simply placing them in a separate room or in the vocal booth.  We will mic amps if you prefer, but we actually recommend recording guitars direct-in.  Not only does this isolate the guitars while recording drums, but it helps us eliminate problems such as amp hiss and hum, and it also allows us to do precision editing and to tweak the sounds during the mix process so we can get the perfect tone for each track.  We know that guitarists hate doing this, however, it is time consuming to get a great guitar sound when micing amps (and you’re paying for the time).  It also requires you have a top-notch amplifier.  We have the latest in amp-simulation technology, such as Amplitube and Ampeg SVX to achieve any desired guitar tone!  Visit our Samples Page to hear our guitar tones; almost all of our guitars are recorded via direct-in.

Q: Do I need to pay in advance?  Do you accept credit cards?

A: We do require that you pay for your session upon booking.  We will not hold the slot in our schedule, (meaning other artists are open to schedule over your desired time) until your session is paid for.  We can accept credit card payments via PayPal.

    Q: What if I need to cancel/reschedule a session?

A: You have 7 days prior to your scheduled session to cancel or reschedule.  If you need to cancel or reschedule your session within 7 days of your booked time, we will retain your payment.

Q: If I provide the chords to a song I wrote, can you arrange it and record the instrumentation?

A: You are in the right place!  Our professionally trained and educated staff can co-write, arrange and produce your tracks to a level of commercial appeal.  Recording of rhythm section instrumentation such as drums/percussion, guitars, bass, and keys are included in our rates.  For a little extra money, you can also utilize our large network of musicians for less common instruments, such a brass or strings.

Q: I read something about record labels and publishing on your Craigslist ad?

A: We work with a number major and minor record labels as well as publishing and licensing firms.  We try to pass all of the music that comes through Barn Productions on to A&R amongst these companies.  Not only is this a great opportunity for artists recording here, but it also ensures that we create quality music because the artists become an opportunity for us as well!

Q: What can I bring to the studio?

A: For both security and productivity reasons, we prefer that only people involved in the recording process accompany you to your recording sessions.  Normally, we will have no problem with one guest, such as a good friend or significant other.  Otherwise, we welcome you to bring anything that helps you get in proper state of mind for your session.  Whether it be candles, tea, incense, beer or cigarettes; what happens here, stays here.  We only ask that you remain functional and that you be respectful to our staff and property.
